Atletico defender suffers ankle ligament damage

Atletico Madrid have confirmed Diego Godin sprained the ligaments in his ankle in their 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Godin, 30, was in imperious form once again to thwart Bayern’s glittering offensive options at the Vicente Calderon in midweek but his performance has come at a cost.

The Uruguay international will now miss Atletico’s encounter with Valencia at the weekend and isn’t expected to link up with his national team during the international break for fixtures against Colombia and Venezuela.

“After a first exploration from the medical services of the club, Diego Godin suffers a sprain of the lateral ligament of his left ankle,” a club statement read, via Football Espana.

“Additional tests will be performed in the next hours and is pending evolution.”
