Hat-trick hero Kane leads Bayern-heavy Champions League Team of the Week
The first round of matches in the new-look UEFA Champions League is now complete. Here, we take a look back at the standout performers from gameweek one.
Represented in our first Champions League Team of the Week are Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayern Munich, Celtic, Manchester City, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.
Dmytro Riznyk (Shakhtar Donetsk) - 8.17
Despite failing to find the net against Bologna on Wednesday night, Shakhtar Donetsk left Italy with a potentially priceless point and clean sheet in tow. And 25-year-old goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk was a crucial part of that defensive effort. Riznyk made a total of five saves, one punched clearance, six throws and two high claims, on his way to a WhoScored rating of 8.17.

Raphael Guerreiro (Bayern Munich) - 7.92
The match of the week undoubtedly came in Bavaria, as Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich side put nine past Dinamo Zagreb at the Allianz Arena. Taking up a defensive role, Raphael Guerreiro was one of the standout performers for the hosts, finding the net with a fine strike on 33 minutes, while also making three key passes, four interceptions and three ball recoveries.
Celtic defender Liam Scales takes up a place in our backline following a strong showing in Wednesday’s 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava. The 26-year-old Ireland international put the hosts in front after 17 minutes, while he also completed 87 of the 93 passes he attempted, made five tackles, three clearances and won nine duels to return an 8.16 WhoScored rating.
Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City) - 8.12
2023 Champions League winners Manchester City struggled to carry over their fast start to the season into Europe on Wednesday evening, as they played out a goalless draw with Inter. Crucial, however, to ensuring his side at least retained a clean sheet, was City defender Josko Gvardiol, who made a tackle, two blocks, two interceptions and one goal line clearance, in a strong all-round display.
Alex Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) - 8.61
Like fellow Bundesliga side Bayern, German champions Bayer Leverkusen were dominant in their opening Champions League clash, putting four past Feyenoord on Thursday evening. As we are now well-accustomed to seeing, Leverkusen left wing-back Alex Grimaldo played a huge part for Xabi Alonso’s side, finding the net in the 30th minute, while also making three successful dribbles, three tackles and three clearances, for a WhoScored rating of 8.61.
Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) - 9.29
21-year-old Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala continued his dazzling start to the season in Tuesday’s ruthless victory over Dinamo Zagreb, providing two assists from a total of seven key passes, while also making four successful dribbles and registering 17 touches in the opposition box.
After scoring in his first start at the weekend, Celtic’s new club-record signing Arne Engels went one further on Wednesday when he both scored and assisted in the win over Slovan Bratislava. Engels provided the assist for Liam Scales’ opening header, before finding the net himself with a second-half penalty.
Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) - 9.26
Joining compatriot Musiala in our XI is Germany’s other young star, Florian Wirtz, who bagged a brace on his Champions League debut against Feyenoord on Thursday evening. The 21-year-old found the net with two of three attempts on goal, while he also made three tackles and won all four of the ground duels he contested, to earn a WhoScored rating of 9.26.
Michael Olise (Bayern Munich) - 8.78
The third Bayern Munich representative to make our Team of the Week is Champions League debutant Michael Olise, who netted two goals on his first appearance in the competition. The 22-year-old has made a bright start to life in the Bundesliga following his summer move from Crystal Palace, and continued that form on Tuesday evening, with his only two attempts on goal finding the back of the net.
Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) - 10.0
With a perfect WhoScored rating of 10.0, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is our Champions League Player of the Week, following his four-goal showing against Dinamo Zagreb. Fresh off the back of a league hat-trick at the weekend, the England captain went one further in midweek, finding the net with four of his eight attempts on goal - with three of those penalties.
Jamie Gittens (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.90
Rounding off our best XI is Borussia Dortmund super-sub winger Jamie Gittens, who made an inspired cameo from the bench to single-handedly secure three points for the German side against Club Brugge on Wednesday night. After entering the field in the 68th minute, Gittens bagged a quickfire brace, finding the net in the 76th and 86th minutes, to then put his side 2-0 up. Inside 22 minutes, the England youth international also managed one key pass and two successful dribbles to return a WhoScored rating of 8.90.
