Manchester United prepared to pass on signing a new centre-back

Manchester United will only sign a new centre-back this summer if they can lure a world class target to Old Trafford, claims The Independent.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to upgrade his defensive options before next season but is not prepared to compromise on his first choice targets.

United are pursuing Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt but are increasingly resigned to losing the 19-year-old to French side Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Kalidou Koulibaly in the past 12 months but their interest in the Napoli star has cooled since missing out on Champions League football for next season.

With De Ligt poised to join PSG, United are prepared to go into next season without strengthening at centre-back.

Solskjaer is ready to give Eric Bailly a chance to salvage his career at Old Trafford and willing to give youngster Axel Tuanzebe first-team opportunities after an impressive loan stint at Aston Villa.

United conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season, a club record amount in the competition’s history.
