Manchester City confirm contract extension for Walker

Manchester City have confirmed Kyle Walker has penned a new two-year contract extension keeping him at the club until the summer of 2024.

Walker has established himself as a first-team regular since joining City from Tottenham for £50m in the summer of 2017.

Walker’s previous deal was not due to expire until the summer of 2022 but City have rewarded the England international with improved terms.

“I’m thrilled to have signed a new deal,” he told the club’s official website. “Playing for City has been everything I’d hoped it would be and more.

“It was an easy decision. I want to be competing for trophies, playing at the highest level, and I feel I have improve hugely as a player during my time here.

“The club’s vision – both on and off the pitch – matches mine perfectly and I’m looking forward to spending the new five years here, hopefully winning more silverware.”

Pep Guardiola’s side are reportedly close to signing Joao Cancelo from Juventus and he would provide direct competition with Walker at right-back.

Walker is often pin-pointed as the weak point in City’s side but this new deal signals he remains integral to their long-term vision.

Only two outfielders played more minutes in the Premier League than Walker of all City players last season but he ranked 14th at the club in terms of highest WhoScored rating (6.96).
