Manchester United still in race for Barcelona target De Ligt
Manchester United are not completely out of the running to sign Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, claims The Daily Telegraph.
De Ligt led Ajax to their first Eredivisie title since 2014 at the age of 19 and is now expected to make a big money move to one of the Europe’s biggest clubs.
Barcelona are the frontrunners to sign the Netherlands international having already agreed a deal for his Ajax team-mate Frenkie de Jong.
Reports emerged earlier this month claiming United passed on De Ligt due to concerns about his weight but it has now been revealed they are still in the race for his signature.
United are desperate to add a world class centre-back to their ranks and De Ligt is reportedly open to moving to Old Trafford.
It comes as a huge surprise that De Ligt is prepared to listen to United’s offer after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side missed out on Champions League football for next season.
De Ligt finished as the second highest WhoScored rated centre-back (7.32) in the Eredivisie this season, behind former United defender Daley Blind (7.35).
