Manchester City set to reward Guardiola with bumper new deal

Manchester City have pencilled in contract talks with Pep Guardiola for the end of the season as they look to secure the Spaniard’s long-term future, reports The Daily Telegraph

Guardiola is approaching the halfway point of his three-year deal at the club but City want the 46-year-old to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s success at city rivals Manchester United.

City have previously floated the idea of offering Guardiola a one-year extension to his current £20m-a-year deal but now want the former Barcelona head coach to pen a long-term contract.

However, Guardiola has never served more than four years at a club and ended up taking a 12-month sabbatical after leaving Barcelona in 2012.

City are currently 11 points clear at the top of the league and Saturday’s emphatic 4-1 win over Tottenham means they have now won a record 16 Premier League matches in a row.

In fact, Guardiola now holds the record for consecutive league wins in the Bundesliga, La Liga and Premier League.

City need to win their next three league matches to match his record of 19 straight wins at Bayern Munich and Guardiola’s side could create history if they beat Watford at home on January 2.
