Manchester United are growing increasingly confident that David De Gea will reject the chance to join Real Madrid in the summer and are preparing a new contract for their star goalkeeper, according to the Manchester Evening News.
De Gea, 26, didn’t feature in any of United’s last three matches of the season and was a substitute for their Europa League final triumph over Ajax on Wednesday raising suspicions that the Spain international had played his final game for the club.
However, United’s qualification for next season’s Champions League is believed to have increased the chances De Gea will remain at Old Trafford and Jose Mourinho’s side are now readying a new contract to secure his long-term services.
Nevertheless, Mourinho is still keeping tabs on Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak and Leicester star Kasper Schmeichel as options just in case Madrid do manage to prize De Gea away in the summer.
Madrid failed to sign De Gea two summers ago but have rekindled their interest in United's No.1 as they look to secure a big name goalkeeper to succeed Keylor Navas.
In the last four Premier League seasons De Gea has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper (51).
