Manchester United break record for Maguire

Manchester United have announced the world-record arrival of Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire on a 6-year deal running until the summer of 2025, with the option of a further year.

The Red Devils have reportedly agreed an initial £60m deal with Leicester plus a further £20m in performance related add-ons, surpassing the £75m fee Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2017.

Maguire was heavily linked with a move to United and Manchester City this summer but the Red Devils, as they have done on numerous occasions in recent years, have won the race.

United also beat City to sign Alexis Sanchez and Fred in the last 18 months and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope Maguire makes a better start to life than the aforementioned duo.

United balked at Leicester’s £65m asking price for Maguire 12 months ago but finally accept they need to break the bank in order to bolster their defensive options.

Solskjaer has mad a conscious effort to build a British core at United this summer and his transformation is almost complete.

Of players that contested at least 30 aerial duels in the Premier League last season, Maguire had the best success rate (77.6%).
