Brighton make £20m bid for Championship defender

Brighton have lodged a £20m plus add-ons bid for Bristol City defender Adam Webster, reports Sky Sports.

Graham Potter’s side have already had an offer for Webster rejected this summer but are optimistic of getting a deal over the line.

Bristol City slapped a £30m asking price on Webster’s head earlier in the summer to ward off interest from Aston Villa.

The Robins paid an initial £3.5m to sign Webster from Ipswich 12 months ago and now stand to make a huge profit on the towering centre-back.

Harry Maguire’s impending move from Leicester to Manchester United will have an enormous domino effect for a number of clubs.

Leicester have earmarked Lewis Dunk as a top target this summer and are expected to bid £40m for the 27-year-old once Maguire leaves.

Brighton are bracing themselves for interest from Leicester and are working to ensure they have a replacement lined up with time running out in the transfer window.

Webster made 44 appearances in the Championship last season and had the second best aerial duel success rate (71.4%) of players that attempted at least 200.

Lee Johnson’s side, meanwhile, reportedly plan to use the money raised from Webster’s departure to sign Ciaran Clark from Newcastle.
