City target signs new Dortmund deal

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been served a decisive blow in his pursuit of Julian Weigl after Borussia Dortmund announced the midfielder has put pen to paper on a new contract extension.

Weigl has been billed as the future for Germany in central midfield and his performances have already drawn comparisons to Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets, with Guardiola unsurprisingly a long-term admirer.

The 21-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire in 2019 but Dortmund have announced the midfielder has signed a new two-year extension keeping him at the club until 2021.

“I feel well looked-after here in Dortmund, both in a sporting sense and generally. It was a logical decision for me to extend my contract, one that required little reflection,” Weigl told Dortmund’s official website.

The former 1860 Munich midfielder has made an impressive start to life at Dortmund since joining in the summer of 2015 and now looks set for long-term success after agreeing to pen the rest of his developing years with the Bundesliga giants.

Only Bayern Munich ace Thiago (1216) has completed more passes in the Bundesliga this season than Weigl (1058).
