Bonucci wanted to join City

Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano claims Leonardo Bonucci wanted to join the club this summer.

Pep Guardiola’s side were heavily linked with a move for the Juventus defender in the summer but no team failed to conclude a deal with the Serie A champions, with Chelsea also interested.

However, Soriano has claimed it was Bonucci that contacted City in order to secure a move to the Premier League giants rather than Guardiola tapping up rival players.

“At the moment there are a lot of players that want to play under Pep,” Soriano told RAC1, via talkSPORT.

“The Italian central defender Bonucci wants to play for him and called us I called the Juventus sporting director [Fabio Paratici] and he told me they didn’t want to sell. There ended the story.”

In the last three Serie A campaigns Bonucci has completed the most passes in his own half of the pitch than any other player (2682).
