Manchester United are monitoring the future of Rennes left-back Faitout Maouassa, claims L'Equipe.
Maouassa has been a consistent performer for Rennes this season and will only have 12 months left to run on his exisiting deal this summer.
Contract extension talks are yet to begin and Rennes will struggle to keep Maouassa if United firm up their interest with an official offer.
It remains to be seen whether that will happen, however, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to have put United's search for a new left-back on hold.
Solskjaer wanted competition for places with Luke Shaw but may have already found that following the emergence of Brandon Williams from the club's academy.
Nevertheless, Maouassa is also on the radar of Premier League side Newcastle, who are in the process of a £300m takeover.
Newcastle reportedly even had a €8m (£7m) bid rejected for the 21-year-old in January before eventually signing Tottenham left-back Danny Rose.
The Magpies are unlikely to make Rose's loan stint permanent at the end of the season and are plotting to return with another offer for Maouassa.
The France Under-21 international, who Zinedine Zidane wanted during his time as Real Madrid castilla manager in 2015, has played a direct hand in four goals in 23 league appearances this term.
