Sassuolo midfielder confirms Roma return

Sassuolo midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini has confirmed he will return to Roma this summer after his boyhood club triggered their buy-back clause.

Pellegrini came through the youth ranks at Roma before being sold to Sassuolo in 2015, but the Giallorossi inserted a €10m (£8.87m) buy-back clause that must be activated by June 30.

The 21-year-old started in Italy’s 3-1 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals of the U21 European Championship on Tuesday evening and after the game the Sassuolo midfielder confirmed he will sign for Roma.

“I will go now and sign for Roma in the hotel,” Football Italia quote Pellegrini as telling reporters in Krakow. “I am returning to Roma in order to play my chances. I want to be a protagonist, of course then the coach and club will decide."

Pellegrini scored a goal of the tournament contender during the group stages of the competition to cap an impressive campaign for the midfielder. The Sassuolo No.6 scored six goals and registered six assists in 28 appearances for Cristian Bucchi’s side last season. In fact, only Gregoire Defrel (12) and Alessandro Matri (8) scored more goals than the youngster for the Neroverdi in Serie A.
