City close to £8m Delph capture

Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph is reportedly set to complete an £8m move to Manchester City within the next 24 hours.

The midfielder only signed a new deal at Villa Park in January, citing a desire to stay loyal to the club after they stuck by him through his injury problems early on in his career, despite interest from a number of clubs over a potential free transfer this summer.

However, it came to light that an agreement had been reached that Villa would have to accept a modest bid of just £8m for their Player of the Season should a top club be interested in signing the 25-year-old.

Delph did not travel with the Villa squad to their pre-season training camp in Portugal and while the reason given was that his wife is due to give birth, it appears the time has still been taken to finalise a deal to the Etihad.

City need to fill a homegrown player quota that has dwindled since the departures of Micah Richards, Scott Sinclair (both to Villa) and James Milner, whilst also looking to bolster their midfield.

Ahead of what is a huge season for Delph, with the upcoming Euro 2016 campaign on the horizon, many feel that the move is a risk on the former Leeds player's part, suggesting he won't get the playing time needed to retain his place in Roy Hodgson's starting XI.

Of all players to attempt 50 or more dribbles in the Premier League last season only potential teammate Yaya Toure had a better success rate than the Villa midfielder (82.4%).
