Real Madrid player leads Champions League quarter-final ratings

It was only a few weeks ago that is was all doom and gloom for Real Madrid. They were 12 points adrift of Barcelona in the league at the end of February and they slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat against Wolfsburg in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

However, fast-forward through to mid-April and the gap between Barcelona and themselves is now only four points and they have booked their spot in the last four of the Champions League for the second year in a row.

Cristiano Ronaldo stole the headlines after netting his third hat-trick in the Champions League this season to ensure they ran out 3-2 aggregate winners on Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to earn the right as the highest rated player in the quarter-final (7.79). The right was in fact reserved for his Madrid teammate, Sergio Ramos (8.03).

The Madrid captain has been in relatively poor form this season but he is now showing signs of coming good just when it matters most, which has become a trademark of Ramos’ career in recent years. Ramos particularly excelled in the second leg where he was dominant at the back and also a threat in attack. He was denied his first Champions League goals of the season on two occasions by the woodwork, which is a record in the competition for a single match this season (2).

Ramos, 30, won 11 aerial duels over the two legs and also completed a combined 11 tackles and interceptions against Wolfsburg to book their place in the semi-finals and ensure there is still a chance they can make something of this season.
