Arsenal blocked Ozil departure on deadline day

Mesut Ozil was given the chance to leave Arsenal on deadline day but the Gunners blocked it, claims The Daily Mirror.

It has emerged a club from Qatar tabled a late bid for Ozil to prise the German away from Arsenal after more than six years at the club.

Ozil has been heavily linked with a move away from Arsenal in the last few years but has become an important player again under Mikel Arteta.

Handing Ozil a lucrative new long-term deal at the start of 2018 has played a major part in financially crippling Arsenal.

However, Arsenal relucantly felt they had to turn down the chance to offload Ozil as they wouldn't have had enough time to sign a replacement.

Ozil has notably returned to favour since Arteta replaced Unai Emery in December, starting all seven of the Spaniard's matches in charge.

The 31-year-old has started 15 Premier League matches so far this season but has registered just one assist in that time.

Despite a return of 2.1 key passes per game in the Premier League this season, Ozil has surprisingly failed to create a single clear-cut goalscoring chance, something five goalkeepers have managed.
