Arsenal interested in La Liga centre-back

Arsenal have joined the race to sign Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez, reports the Sun on Sunday.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with a move away from Atletico having lost his place in the starting XI for the Spanish outfit.

Manchester United have been courting the young centre-back and Arsenal have since registered an interest in the 21-year-old.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has made Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi his first choice centre-back partnership, but options are thin on the ground for the Frenchman.

Per Mertesacker is currently recovering from a knee injury, while Gabriel Paulista has struggled with the physical demands of the Premier League, which leaves only Rob Holding as cover for Koscielny and Mustafi.

Atletico want to keep holding of Gimenez, but are aware he has just 18 months left to run on his current contract at the Calderon and is thought to be weighing up his options and has a release clause of £54m.
