Palmeiras coach to step down

Cuca will step down as Palmeiras head coach at the end of this season due to personal reasons.

The 53-year-old has only just led Palmeiras to their first Brasileirao title since 1994, but has announced the last game of the season, which has been delayed a week due to the tragic Chapecoense air crash, against Vitoria will be his last for the club.

Cuca had intended to spend 2016 with his family only to be persuaded to take over as Palmeiras manager at the start of the year by club president Paulo Nobre, a decision that has reaped huge rewards.

“I leave very happy and with the mission accomplished,” AOL quote Cuca as saying. “I’m sure I will return one day to continue my story in the club. I supported the club as a child and never hid it from anyone. On Sunday I became a champions twice: as a coach and a fan.

“I had always said I would dedicate myself only to my family in 2016, but was convinced by the president’s project and my love for Palmeiras. “It is a difficult choice but I had to do it."
