Liverpool to open talks with key man over new contract

Liverpool are ready to open talks with key midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum over a new deal that would see him extend his four-year stay at Anfield, reports the Daily Star.

The Dutchman has been a consistent performer in the Reds midfield following his arrival from Newcastle in 2016 and is widely considered one of the club's unheralded performers.

Wijnaldum's current contract runs until 2021 and while Liverpool had previously entertained the idea of cashing in on the Dutchman this summer, it's believed both parties are now negotiating over a new deal that would run until 2023, with an option of a further year.

The 29-year-old may have only netted three times in the Premier League this season, but head coach Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of Wijnaldum, who has started all but one top-flight match for the Reds this term.

Wijnaldum has formed an impressive partnership with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the Liverpool midfield and the understanding between the trio has helped the Reds to top spot.

His good form in the middle of the park has seen the Netherlands international yield a WhoScored rating of 6.87 in England's top tier this term.
