Espanyol have announced ex-Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores as their new manager on a three-year deal.
Flores, 51, was sacked by Watford at the end of last season despite guiding them to a FA Cup semi final and 13th in the Premier League during their first season back in the top-flight.
The Spaniard has previously had four stints at managing in La Liga, notably leading Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory in 2010, and he has now returned to Spain as Sergio Gonzalez’s long-term successor.
There had been reports suggesting the deal could fall through following late interest from Sevilla, as they plan for Unai Emery’s expected departure to Paris Saint-Germain. However, Espanyol, who have recently been taken over by Chinese investors, have managed to bat away their interest.
Flores boasts an impressive win ratio of 43.6% from his 259 games as a manager of a Spanish side and he will immediately be tasked with ensuring they do not endure another tight relegation battle like last season.
