Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has opened the door to a potential return to the Bundesliga after refusing to rule out a move back to his place of birth.
Ozil hasn’t played club football in Germany since leaving Werder Bremen for Real Madrid in 2010 but his immediate future beyond the end of the season remains uncertain.
The Germany international will have 12 months to run on his existing deal with Arsenal at the end of the season and talks about a renewal have been shelved until the summer.
It currently appears that Arsenal will be forced to sell their main creator and the 28-year-old has refused to exclude Germany as a potential playing destination in the future.
“I don’t want to exclude that [a return to Germany],” Ozil told SportBild, via Get German Football. “Many family member – my mother especially – would welcome it if I were closer to home.
“I still have a year on my contract and I love running for this club. At the moment, everything is still open.”
It’s been a thoroughly disappointing season by Ozil’s usual very high standards but Arsenal would still be worse off without his influence in the attacking third.
In fact, only Cesc Fabregas (32) has registered more assists as Ozil in the last three Premier League campaigns (28).
