Leeds miss out on top target James

Leeds have failed to get a deadline day deal over the line for Swansea winger Daniel James, the The Daily Mirror.

The Championship leaders pursued James all month and believed they had successfully managed to sign the 21-year-old only for Swansea to go quiet at the death.

Leeds agreed a £2m deal in principle on deadline day to loan James for the remainder of the season with a view to make the move permanent for a further £10m if they won promotion.

The Wales international even completed a medical with the Championship leaders but the greenlight from Swansea never came and a deal collapsed.

James told Swansea of his desire to join Marcelo Bielsa's side and will now return to the Welsh outfit immensely frustrated.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa felt the need to pursue James after being left light in midfield following the departures of Samu Saiz and Lewis Baker earlier in the window.

James has played a direct hand in five goals in 18 Championship appearances this season (three goals, two assists).

Of players aged 23 and under to have made at least 10 appearances in the Championship this season, James is fouled more times per 90 than any other player (3).
