Manchester United eye Napoli striker

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Napoli striker Dries Mertens, claims The Sun.

Mourinho has previously ruled out bolstering his offensive options in the summer but appears to have ran out of patience with Anthony Martial.

Martial’s departure would almost certainly force the United manager into the market for a new forward and Mourinho reportedly has eyes on Mertens.

The 30-year-old has a £25m release clause in his existing Napoli deal that will be active this summer and available for teams outside of Italy to trigger.

Mertens has started to flourish in the last few years of his career and Mourinho is interested in reuniting the forward with international team-mate Romelu Lukaku.

Since the start of last season only Ciro Immobile (52) and Mauro Icardi (51) have scored more Serie A goals than Mertens (45).
