Paris Saint-Germain target Borussia Dortmund midfielder

Paris Saint-Germain have earmarked Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl as their top midfield target for the January transfer window, reports ESPN.

Thomas Tuchel is desperate to sign a new central midfielder this month to ensure PSG can compete in all competitions for the second half of the season.

Lass Diarra is reportedly considering immediate retirement and Adrien Rabiot has been frozen out after making it clear he will leave this summer when his contract expires.

PSG are in talks to sign Ajax wonderkid Frenkie De Jong but any deal for the 21-year-old will only be completed at the end of the season.

Tuchel still wants to bolster his midfield options this month after PSG failed to address the position in the summer and Weigl is his top choice.

The PSG head coach worked with Weigl during his stint as Dortmund head coach and the Germany international is keen to work with Tuchel again.

Weigl was tipped as the brightest midfield talent a few years ago but has failed to live up to his potential and now even struggles to play for Dortmund.

The 23-year-old has only made four appearances in the Bundesliga this season and PSG are hoping to use the fact he is not part of Lucien Favre’s plans to prise him away this month.

During Tuchel’s three years at Dortmund, the Bundesliga side actually had a better win ratio in the league without Weigl in the starting XI (66.7%) compared to when he did feature from the off (51.%).
