Tottenham ponder summer move for relegated striker

Tottenham are considering a summer move for Watford striker Troy Deeney as they look to secure a backup frontman for Harry Kane, reports The Mail on Sunday.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for another striker in January as they looked to secure a frontman to provide cover for Kane, who at the time was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Dele Alli deputised commendably in Kane's absence before the Premier League season was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The north London side remain in the market for a backup forward and they may look to Watford and offer Deeney the chance to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

The 32-year-old scored 10 times for the Hornets in 2019/20 and has the aerial presence to offer Spurs an attacking alternative to ease the burden on Kane.

Spurs have looked to play a more direct style of football since Jose Mourinho took over the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium reins in November and Deeney would afford the Portuguese boss greater offensive versatility in the final third.

Indeed, Deeney won more aerial duels per game (7.3) than any other player in the Premier League last season.
