Arsenal creator being made a scapegoat, says agent

The agent of Meust Ozil has claimed the German is being made a scapegoat for Arsenal’s woes this season.

Arsenal are on the verge of elimination from the Champions League after being thrashed 5-1 by Bayern Munich in the first leg of their last 16 encounter and will be looking to avoid further embarrassment when they face Sutton United in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday.

Arsene Wenger’s position at the club has come under heavy scrutiny this year and he is not the only one that has been subject to severe criticism, with Ozil also taking the brunt of the blame for his languid approach on the pitch.

“Criticism is normal if a player plays badly,” his agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, told BBC Sport. “But Mesut feels people are not focusing on his performance; they are using him as a scapegoat for the team after bad results.”

The criticism is hardly likely to make Ozil put questions over his long-term future at the club to bed and sign a new deal as a summer exit looks on the cards.

The former Real Madrid creator will only have 12 months left on his current deal in the summer and Arsenal are still refusing to meet his massive wage demands, while he is also waiting to see what Wenger decides to do at the end of the season.

Ozil has only managed to play a direct hand in three goals in his last 10 matches.
