Southampton are keen on signing Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto this summer, though face competition for his signature from Serie A side Sampdoria, reports Sky Sports.
The Argentine frontman spent last season on loan with La Liga side Sevilla, where he bagged six goals and registered a further three assists in 21 top-flight appearances.
It remains to be seen whether Sevilla will take up their option buy the Argentine striker, which has seen Saints enter the race to sign Vietto.
The south coast side are in the market for a new frontman following Jay Rodriguez’s move to Premier League rivals West Brom.
Atletico Madrid are supposedly open to the idea of selling the 23-year-old this summer, with Saints hoping to beat Sampdoria in the race to land the youngster.
Saints head coach Mauricio Pellegrino will be aware of Vietto’s talents following his spell in charge of Alaves last season, with the 45-year-old perhaps confident he can bring out the best in his compatriot.
