Paris Saint-Germain veteran signs new one-year deal

Paris Saint-Germain have announced Thiago Motta has put pen to paper on a new 12-month deal to extend his stay until the end of next season.

Motta, 34, who has now signed rolling 12-month contract extensions in successive summers, has spent the last five years at PSG and has been a mainstay in their central midfield during that time.

The 34-year-old was linked with a return to Italy this summer but PSG have moved to secure his services for next season as they plot their way back to the summit of Ligue 1.

“It is a great pleasure to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain,” he told the club’s official website. “I have a special history with the club, which has given me a lot of confidence over the last five years.

“The adventure continues and I am very happy. We will continue to be competitive and we will give the maximum to go as far as possible in all the competitions in which we will participate.”

PSG are currently in a defining summer for the club as they look to bat away interest from Barcelona in star man Marco Verratti, and it would have been a disaster to lose him and the experience of Motta from their midfield in one swoop.

In Europe’s top five leagues last season only Napoli midfielder Jorginho (98) and Bayern Munich ace Thiago Alcantara (94.9) averaged more passes per game than Motta (91.5).
