Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed Ilkay Gundogan suffered knee ligament damage in their 2-0 win over Watford on Wednesday and will be sidelined for several months.
Gundogan, who has a history of knee injuries, was forced off just before half-time in their midweek win and has suffered ligament damage to the same knee he dislocated in May.
The 26-year-old joined City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer and is thought to be central to Guardiola’s long-term vision at the club, although he will now be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
“I’m so sad as it look like we’ll be without him for a long time,” ESPN quote Guardiola as saying after their win over Watford. “He’s sad. So sad. We spoke with him and he said I want to try but when he hangs up and says he cannot follow him we expected it was not good.”
“We will know more tomorrow. It doesn’t look good. We’ll know the extent of the injury when he has been properly assessed by the doctor but I think he may be out for some time.”
Gundogan has scored four goals in 10 league appearances this season, while he boosts a superb pass success rate of 91.9%, which is the best success rate at the club from those to have started at least one game.
