Olivier Giroud has conceded he hoped to score more goals at Chelsea following his move from Arsenal in January.
The 31-year-old made the surprise switch across London in order to improve his chances of starting for France at the 2018 World Cup this summer.
Giroud has started nine matches in all competitions for Chelsea and was even picked over summer signing Alvaro Morata to lead the line against Barcelona at the Camp Nou earlier this month.
However, the Frenchman has only scored one goal in that time and he has now conceded he hoped things would go better upon his arrival.
“I am happy with my adaptation, the welcome I received, and the relationship on the ground with my team-mates,” Giroud told L’Equipe.
“You have to be demanding with yourself. If I signed to Chelsea, it’s to have a new challenge. When you sign like that in January, it’s never easy because you have to acclimatise to your team, but I really wanted to be ready right away. It was a little paradoxical.
“I could have – should have – scored more goals. In terms of statistics, I am very attached to this; I remain stuck at one goal and three assists in five matches. I’m sure it is not enough.
“But, in any case, the content [of my matches] is very encouraging. In time I will do it. [It’s encouraging] in my relationship with offensive players; whether with Willian, Pedro or Eden Hazard.”
Despite a lack of goals, Giroud is expected to retain his place up front for France when they play Colombia on Friday night.
Antonio Conte appears to have taken quite well to Giroud since his arrival, but it has only heaped more pressure on Morata, who has been left out of the Spain squad as a result of his poor form.
Morata scored in Chelsea’s last match but that ended 13-game run without a goal, in which he was sent off and booked four times.
