Manchester United have entered contract talks with veteran midfielder Michael Carrick, according to ESPN.
Carrick’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether the 35-year-old will be kept on next season following a dip in form that has coincided with United’s unwanted run of draws.
The England international was seen as the catalyst to United’s resurgence at the start of the season but his performances have waned of late and with new midfielders planned to be signed this summer, his importance may only continue to diminish.
However, Mourinho is still reportedly open to the idea of retaining Carrick’s services beyond the end of the season with a new 12-month deal, which would keep the midfielder at United for a 12th season.
Carrick has not tasted defeat in the Premier League when he has started for United, but Mourinho’s side have only won seven of the 14 matches he has been included in the starting XI, perhaps summing up a frustrating campaign for the veteran.
