Bale key in Tottenham's defender pursuit

Gareth Bale could be key in Tottenham's push to land Swansea City centre-back Joe Rodon ahead of next week's domestic deadline, reports The Star on Sunday.

Spurs had hoped to snare a new centre-back before last week's European deadline, but they failed in pursuits of Inter's Milan Skriniar and Chelsea outcast Antonio Rudiger.

The domestic deadline doesn't close until 5pm on October 16th, which means Premier League sides can still do dealings with EFL outfits.

Indeed, Spurs will look to utilise the domestic window to sign a new centre-back with Rodon believed to be top of their wishlist.

Both teams are apart from in their valuation, but negotiations are expected to continue over the coming days as Tottenham look to improve at the back.

Manchester United and Manchester City have both been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old, but the influence of Wales teammates Bale and Ben Davies means Spurs are favourites to land the Swansea ace.

Rodon has played every minute of the 2020/21 Championship season, with Swansea unbeaten after four league matches this term.
