Chelsea defender ready to leave in January

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill will push to leave the club in January if he remains out of favour under new head coach Maurizio Sarri, claims The Sun.

Cahill has largely been a first-team regular during his six-year stint at Chelsea but is yet to feature for the Blues this season.

Sarri has scrapped the three-man defence Chelsea used in the last two seasons under Antonio Conte and has given David Luiz the chance to ressurect his career at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz dropped down the pecking order under Conte last season and looked destined to leave Chelsea in the summer for the second time in his career.

Sarri has thrown Luiz a lifeline but that has come at the expense of Cahill, who is prepared to find regular playing time elsehwere if things do not improve before the New Year.

The 32-year-old is expected to be involved when Chelsea's Europa League matches start later this month but even that is unlikely to satisfy the veteran defender.

Cahill called time on his international career at the end of last month but aims to continue playing in the Premier League for the next three years.

Since joining Chelsea, Cahill has only committed four errors that have directly led to an opposition goal in 179 Premier League appearances.
