Stoke City are looking to sign Ingolstadt goalkeeper Orjan Nyland after being priced out of a permanent deal to sign Derby Country goalkeeper Lee Grant, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Grant joined Stoke on loan at the end of the summer transfer window as Mark Hughes’ side desperately looked to sign a new goalkeeper following Jack Butland’s lay-off and Shay Given’s underwhelming attempt to deputise in his absence.
The 33-year-old’s loan spell with Stoke is due to expire in January but the Potters had hoped to make the switch permanent following his immense performances between the sticks.
However, Hughes has always maintained the club will not be held to ransom by the Championship outfit, and with Derby demanding £4m for Grant, Stoke have turned their attentions to Norwegian goalkeeper Nyland.
The 26-year-old spent last season as a reserve for the Bundesliga side but has started nine league games this season following Ramazan Ozcan’s move to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
Nyland has shared first-team responsibilities with Martin Hansen so far this season, but Stoke may find it hard to sign the shot-stopper after Hansen was forced through injury in their shock 1-0 win over RB Leipzig last weekend.
The Norway international has conceded 19 goals in his nine league starts this season, while a save success rate of 61.5% is among the lowest in the division this season.
