Madrid president rules out January move for Premier League star
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has ruled out a January move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
With Madrid set to incur a transfer ban in the summer, there had been suggestions the La Liga giants could bring forward their transfer plans, which include signing De Gea.
The 25-year-old was expected to make the move to Madrid over the summer but saw his deal collapse at the last second before putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.
However, it has been widely reported that the Spain international’s representatives had a release clause included in his new deal to enable him to make his dream move to Madrid in the future, but that will now happen this month.
“The Fifa sanction is hurtful,” Perez told France Football. “It is a very serious matter to smear Real Madrid’s reputation in this way. We are convinced that it is all a mistake; it is ridiculous to think Real Madrid will be punished for a matter concerning the protection of minors when the children have always been a priority for us.
“We are not going to be making any signings in the January window but that doesn’t have anything to do with the ban, it is because we have the best players and the best coach."
After being dropped for the first few games of the season, De Gea has picked up where he left off last season. He has again been one of United’s best players and their league position could be even worse had it not been for his performances between the sticks thus far.
In fact, United have the second best defensive record in the Premier League (21 goals conceded) and much of that has been because of De Gea.
