Champions League ambitions stalling Ibrahimovic extension at Manchester United
Manchester United have not been able to confirm Zlatan Ibrahimovic has extended his stay at Old Trafford by a further 12 months with the veteran striker waiting to see whether the club are in the Champions League next season, reports The Daily Mirror.
Ibrahimovic’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season but Jose Mourinho has reiterated on multiple occasions already throughout the campaign that the former Sweden international would be at the club next season.
However, at 35, Ibrahimovic realistically only has one more year at a top European club before he winds down his career in MLS and the Champions League is the only competition he has not won in his club career.
United, who take on Southampton in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, are currently sixth in the Premier League and two points adrift of Arsenal in fourth place. Ibrahimovic has been outstanding for United this season but his stint in England may only last one season if they fail to qualify for Europe’s premier competition next season.
Despite only joining United last summer, Ibrahimovic has already scored more goals than any other United player since the start of last season (25).
