Liverpool have pulled the plug on Dejan Lovren’s proposed move to Roma following underhand tactics from the Serie A outfit, claims ESPN.
Roma held talks with Liverpool about a potential £15m transfer for Lovren but failed to table a formal offer for the 30-year-old.
It then emerged Roma were working behind the scenes to secure Lovren on a season-long loan deal rather than a permanent transfer previously discussed.
Loaning out Lovren has no benefits to Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s side have decided to end talks with the Serie A outfit.
Lovren has dropped down to fourth choice at Liverpool this season and Klopp was willing to sell the former Croatia international for the right price.
Klopp was prepared to promote highly rated youngster Ki-Jana Hoever as Liverpool’s fourth choice centre-back if Lovren departed.
Liverpool also signed young defender Sepp van den Berg over the summer but Lovren will now be forced to spend the season at Anfield.
Lovren has spent the last five years at Liverpool and his displays have divided opinion among supporters during that time.
In fact, Lovren has committed the most errors directly leading to an opposition goal in the Premier League of all Liverpool outfielders since August 2014 (five).
