Lyon call signing Manchester United misfit ‘a priority’

Lyon manager Bruno Genesio has revealed the Ligue 1 outfit have made signing Manchester United outcast Memphis Depay ‘a priority’.

Memphis, 23, has been given the greenlight to leave Old Trafford this month after failing to make an impression under Jose Mourinho this season.

The Netherlands international had been heavily linked with a move to Everton but the fact that United will only allow Memphis to leave on a permanent basis seems to have put an end to Everton’s interest for now.

It emerged on Thursday that Lyon had a bid for Memphis rejected, with United firm on their £15m asking price, and the Ligue 1 giants have announced they have made his signature their number one priority.

“Memphis is a priority,” Get French Football quote Genesio as saying. “He is complete, powerful and has great potential. Contrary to what I have read, I am a fan of Memphis.”

United are looking to chance their reputation for selling good players for cheap, which showed in their ability to command £24m for Morgan Schneiderlin on Thursday.

Memphis arrived with great hype after dazzling in the Eredivisie for Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven but he has failed to live up to the billing due to various reasons.

Of players to have started at least 10 Premier League games in the last two campaigns, only Kelechi Iheanacho (every 19.9 mins) has been dispossessed more frequently than Memphis (21 mins).
