Marseille sign Diaby

Marseille have beaten off competition from West Bromwich Albion to sign Abou Diaby on a free contract, the French club have confirmed.

Diaby, 29, was released by Arsenal at the start of the summer after nine years at the club and had looked set to join the Baggies before rejecting a contract in favour of the Ligue 1 outfit.

The French midfielder was once tipped as the next Patrick Vieira at the start of his Arsenal career but has seen his formative years dogged by numerous long-term injuries.

Only four players gained a higher WhoScored rating than Diaby (7.76) in the 2009/10 Premier League campaign, however the Frenchman has only played 16 of a possible 6,840 minutes in England’s top-flight since August 2013.
