The club remain hopful they can still convince Gomes to extend his stay at the club, but time is running out if they are to have the youngster put pen to paper on a new contract.
Chelsea, then, are becoming increasingly confident that they can lure the 19-year-old south this summer.
Gomes has made just two sub appearances in the Premier League this season, but has featured more regularly in the Europa League for United, making three starts in the competition.
Blues boss Frank Lampard is a big advocate of using youth team players have given first team opportunities to the likes of Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham this season.
And Gomes may look at the chances his compatriots have been handed under Lampard and believe his future is best suited at the west London side.
Chelsea currently sit just three points and one spot above United in the Premier League table.
