Aston Villa’s January signing faces long spell on sidelines

Aston Villa are fearing the worst after January arrival Scott Hogan was stretchered off during their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday night with a serious ankle injury.

Hogan, 24, landed awkwardly on his ankle with just two minutes remaining of Villa’s latest defeat that has left them in 17th and only six points above the bottom three.

Steve Bruce’s side fended off interest from West Ham to land the £12m signing from Brentford on deadline day last month and his arrival was supposed to help fie Villa towards the play-off places.

However, Villa have only plummeted further down the table since his arrival and Hogan may now miss the remainder of the season as Bruce’s side wait on scan results from his horror injury.

“Our night has been compounded with Scotty, who looks as if he’s turned his ankle,” The Sun quote Bruce as saying after the match.

“The kid doesn’t think it’s as serious as it looks but until he’s had a scan and x-ray in the next 48 hours or so, we won’t know. Fingers crossed it’s not bad but I think it will be bad enough.”

Hogan has made four appearances for Villa in the Championship since making the switch from Brentford and was still looking for his first goal, having netted an impressive 14 goals in 25 league appearances before joining.
