Arsenal team news: Cech set to retain place against former side Chelsea
Arsenal manager Unai Emery has suggested Petr Cech will retain his place in the team when the Gunners face London rivals Chelsea on Saturday.
Cech was surprisingly selected to start Arsenal's league-opener against Manchester City and the veteran goalkeeper endured several shaky moments between the sticks.
Arsenal paid Bayer Leverkusen £22m to sign Germany international Bernd Leno during the summer and he was expected to usurp Cech as the club's first choice goalkeeper this season.
However, Emery insists he will not chop and change his team after one match and has backed Cech to perform against former club Chelsea this weekend.
"Petr Cech can continue to start the match. I believe in him," The Guardian quote Emery as saying. "But if Bernd starts, I believe in him also.
"Football is very challenging. Goalkeepers can play like a player, to start short with the centre-back or the full-back. It is not compulsory to start each action that way.
"Maybe if the opposition is doing high pressing against us, then we need also to find another option and to play the ball long. We are training for each situation.
"I want in each movement to know what is our best action to do in the match. This is our creative style and idea."
Cech appeared to struggle with Emery's concept of playing out of the back and almost passed the ball into his own net at one point, narrowly sliding beyond his far post.
After a nervous start, Cech did emerge as a key player for Arsenal during their 2-0 defeat to City. The 36-year-old ended up making six saves and helped the Gunners keep the scoreline down.
Since the start of last season, Cech has made more errors that have directly led to an opposition goal than any other player in the Premier League (6).
