Leicester manager rules out Maguire deadline day move to Manchester United

Leicester manager Claude Puel has today ruled out any chance of Harry Maguire joining Manchester United.

Maguire is one of several options being considered by United, as the Premier League giants desperately look to sign a new centre-back on deadline day.

The 25-year-old was a revelation for England at the 2018 World Cup after turning in several eye-catching displays in Russia.

Leicester are keen to keep Maguire, despite potentially finishing the transfer window having signed three new centre-backs, and are reportedly planning a bumper new deal for the defender.

There is a chance Maguire will be fit enough to play United on Friday in Leicester’s opening Premier League fixture and Puel insists that is the only reason why he will be going to Old Trafford.

“I am happy to keep Harry. He is our best player,” The Independent quote Puel as saying on Thursday. “I am a football manager and I want to keep our best players for the squad and for our season.

“We want to keep good ambition. We lost Riyad Mahrez, who was a very valuable player for us, so it was important to keep our best players and have good additions to the squad.

“We have had good talks with Harry and with the chairman and we cannot change things just before the game and just before the end of the transfer window.

“For us it is not possible. It is not serious. We have to prepare for this season with good possibilities.”

Maguire garnered an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.30 from his six starts at the 2018 World Cup, scoring one and providing one assist in that time.

The hulking defender was almost unplayable from attacking set-pieces and proved a real weapon for the Three Lions in Russia.
