Race heating up for promising Uruguayan defender

Barcelona have joined Chelsea and Manchester City in the race to sign Atletico Madrid centre-back Gimenez, reports talkSPORT.

The highly rated Uruguay international has become a key man for the La Liga side, though missed out on a starting berth for the Champions League final with Stefan Savic starting alongside Diego Godin at the heart of the defence.

However, that is unlikely to deter potential suitors in the race to secure the youngster's services, with interest heating up in Gimenez.

Question marks over Diego Simeone's future at the Calderon, with PSG interested in the Argentine, has led to speculation that a number of key first team players could seek a move away from the club this summer.

Gimenez, 21, is one Atletico would ideally look to hold onto, but could be powerless to resist the temptation to sell, particularly if they receieve a sizeable bid for the defender.

PSG and Real Madrid are also said to be interested in Gimenez, who has just two years left to run on his current Atletico contract.
