Schweinsteiger’s future in his own hands, says Guardiola

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola hopes that Bastian Schweinsteiger stays at the club, but admits the German midfielder is the one in control of what happens this summer.

Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing the 30-year-old and were handed a boost in their pursuit following comments made by Bayern’s sporting director Matthias Sammer earlier in the week that suggested the club were unsure whether or not they wanted to keep him at the club.

However, Guardiola has now had his say and hopes the player will remain at the Allianz Arena.

“I have already said, read and heard a lot of things about Basti, but his future depends on him,” said Guardiola in Thursday’s press conference. “I think he will stay, but only he can decide.”

Louis van Gaal is looking to add class and experience ahead of United's return to the Champions League and had targeted Schweinsteiger – a player he formerly managed – to add just that to his midfield. Only Phillip Lahm has played more accurate passes in the last six Bundesliga seasons that Schweinsteiger (9,954).
