Liverpool boss shoulders blame for quiet January transfer window
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has conceded he will shoulder the blame if a quiet January transfer window is to blame for the club failing to meet their end of season objectives.
Klopp’s side sunk to new lows as they dropped out of the top four at the weekend following a shock 2-0 loss to relegation strugglers Hull, which means the Reds’ only win of 2017 has come against League Two side Plymouth in an FA Cup replay.
Liverpool failed to sign any new players in January to help maintain their strong title challenge and the Reds have only won one of their resulting 10 matches since the turn of the year.
Not only are Liverpool now out of the title race they are now facing the reality of missing out on the top four altogether if their current form is to go by and the club have come in for criticism about their lack of investment in the winter transfer window which has coincided with a severe slump in form.
Klopp, however, has revealed there was money to spend but they failed to identify the right players that would have improved the current squad.
“What’s very important, never blame anybody else for your own mistakes,” The Liverpool Echo quote Klopp as saying. “That’s not the case.
“I cannot change my answer only because we played bad football today. I cannot say ‘yes it would be fantastic if the club gave me the opportunity’, we had from the club side the opportunity to do something but we didn’t find the right players.
“That’s because the players were not available. We tried different things, it’s not a money issue or whatever different reason. I take everything. If you say now ‘not enough players, not good enough players’ I have to take it.
“We have to show the reaction but it will not change my answers because of things like this after a game which I’m not happy about.”
In fact, since the start 2017, only Bournemouth (2) and Leicester (1) have won fewer points in the Premier League than Liverpool (3
