Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed he is ‘very happy’ at Chicago Fire but refused to commit his future in Major League Soccer beyond the end of the current campaign.
The Fire handed Schweinsteiger an escape route from his disastrous two-year stint at United back in March and the 32-year-old has been a success for Veljko Paunovic’s side since making his debut for the franchise.
However, the one-time World Cup winner signed a one-year deal with the MLS franchise and the former Bayern Munich star was coy when asked about his future in America despite the fact there is an option to extend his stay throughout 2018.
“I’m really happy here and everything fits,” he told Die Welt, via Yahoo Sport. “The club is making progress and has helped my family and me a lot.
“The team wants to improve and the training staff are super. The Chicago people are also really nice and I’m having a lot of fun here. I don’t know how long I’ll play in the MLS, but at least this season!”
Since making his debut for the Fire at the start of April, Paunovic’s side have won more points than any other side in MLS (24) and they are now only one point below Eastern Conference leaders Toronto.
Only David Accam (7.41) has secured a higher WhoScored rating in MLS this season for the Fire than Schweinsteiger (7.28), who scored in two of his opening three matches for his new club.
In fact, only four other players average more passes per MLS game than the European star this season (72.2).
