Chelsea to pull plug on defender deal

Chelsea will no longer pursue Everton centre-back John Stones when the transfer window re-opens, according to the Daily Star.

The England international has been a long-term target for the Blues, who failed with three bids to sign Stones last summer.

The Toffees are keen to hold onto the 21-year-old, but know they may struggle to retain the youngster's services at the end of the season.

However, Chelsea are not expected to continue their pursuit of Stones, with incoming coach Antonio Conte hoping to pry Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus instead.

Chelsea need to bolster at the back with John Terry departing at the end of the season and Kurt Zouma's long-term injury and Conte favours a move for compatriot Bonucci.

It remains to be seen, though, wether Juventus would sanction the sale of the 28-year-old, who has been an impressive performer for the Old Lady this season.
