Liverpool target joining Atletico Madrid

Monaco have announced they have agreed a deal in principle with Atletico Madrid for the sale of Liverpool target Thomas Lemar.

The France international has been heavily linked with a move away from Monaco in the last 12 months and even turned down the chance to join Arsenal last summer.

Liverpool have also monitored Lemar’s progress in that time and there were suggestions Jurgen Klopp’s side would move for the 22-year-old in the wake of their collapsed deal for Nabil Fekir.

Atletico had a €60m bid for Lemar rejected earlier this month but the Spanish giants have made a decisive breakthrough in talks with Monaco.

“AS Monaco and Atletico Madrid announce that they have found an agreement in principle for the transfer of Thomas Lemar,” a statement read on Monaco’s official Twitter account.

“The two clubs will continue to work in the coming days in order to find a definitive agreement.”

Monaco made more than £150m in sales last summer, including another £159m from Kylian Mbappe’s loan switch to Paris Saint-Germain, which has since been made permanent.

Leonardo Jardim’s side have already sold Fabinho to Liverpool in a deal worth £40m this summer and are now set to cash in on Lemar, who just endured a turbulent campaign for the French side.

In the last two Ligue 1 campaigns, only Thomas Mangani (70) has provided more goalscoring opportunities from set pieces than Lemar (59).
