Filipe Luis is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after the Atletico Madrid defender suffered a hamstring injury during their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday, reports MARCA.
The 32-year-old was not forced off against his former side but an MRI examination completed on Thursday morning showed Luis suffered a first grade muscle injury to his hamstring.
Luis has established himself as one of the best full-backs in Spain during his two spells with Atletico and news of his absence is a further blow to Diego Simeone’s side after they fell to defeat in their first European match at their new stadium in midweek.
Atletico conceded as many goals against Chelsea as they had shipped in their previous 11 Champions League home matches combined (2) and it now means Lucas Hernandez can expect a run in the time while Luis recovers.
No defender has completed more dribbles in La Liga since the start of last season than Luis (78).
